The One That Got Away

American bitterns, as well as their heron cousins, are quite proficient hunters. They do need to eat after all. So my dad and I were all the more surprised to see this bittern catch this young frog, but was unable to transfer it from the front of its' beak to the back of its' throat. THe frog was dropped and was not recovered. As you can image from this photo, I doubt this poor frog escaped the day with its' life, and these injuries likely proved to be fatal. Nature is sure cruel.
